Tools We Love: A Good CEO Dashboard

Every client who works with us gets a dashboard. Not a generic template we hand over during onboarding and never touch again — a working scorecard we build together, review together, and actually use to decide where the next dollar goes.

We get asked a lot, especially by growth leaders who’ve been burned by reporting before: what actually makes a dashboard good? Here’s what we’ve landed on after building these for brands across the outdoor and wellness space.

It measures what counts, not what’s easy to pull. Impressions and follower counts are simple to report and easy to feel good about. But if a number doesn’t connect back to a real business goal — revenue, new customers, retention — it’s just noise with a nice chart around it. Every metric on a Cereus dashboard is there because it maps to one of three things: are we generating demand, converting it, or keeping it. That’s it.

It’s aligned to the goals of the business, not just the goals of marketing. A dashboard that only tracks reach and engagement tells you how the content did. It doesn’t tell you how the brand did. We build ours around the same framework we use in a Brand Macros audit — reach and shares when we’re generating demand, conversions and revenue when we’re converting it, return customers and lifetime value when we’re nurturing loyalty — so leadership is looking at the same numbers we are, and neither side has to translate.

It’s collaborative. This is the one people don’t expect. A dashboard isn’t something marketing builds in isolation and hands down to leadership once a month. Everyone on the team plays a role in adding stats and bringing a voice to what the numbers mean — because the person running paid social sees something different in the data than the person on content, and both of those perspectives belong in the room.

And the room is real. We review these dashboards every single month, in an actual strategy & performance meeting, with the client. Not a static report that gets skimmed and forgotten — a conversation about what moved, what didn’t, and what we’re doing differently next month because of it.

That monthly discipline is where the results come from. When we told you content views were up 220% and engagement was up 59% for The Body Lab in month one, that wasn’t a good month we screenshotted and ran with — it came off the same dashboard we build for every client, tracked the same way, reviewed in the same kind of meeting. The dashboard isn’t the deliverable. It’s how we know what’s actually working before we tell you what’s working.

If you want to see what one of these looks like for a brand like yours - book a Brand Macros intro call and we’ll walk you through how we’d build yours.
